Developed and published entirely by a single individual who goes by the name KIRUKO, Seven Heroes of Sorrow is a large-scale, story-driven fantasy RPG first released for free on Japanese platforms such as PLiCy. The project began in 2020 and development on the free version concluded in February 2025, since growing into a full-length title spanning five chapters with an estimated total 40–50 hours of main story content. The game also features voice acting with more than 120 voice actors credited.

Seven Heroes of Sorrow has already drawn attention in Japan’s indie scene, winning two awards for free games and appearing at events such as Indie Live Expo, and has been downloaded by over 20,000 players and played over 100,000 times in PliCy.

The commercial Steam release of the game will add an entirely new sixth chapter, new characters, a substantial amount of additional optional content, and functionality to import saves from the free version of the game.
While the commercial release only has a Steam release planned at the moment, expansion to consoles such as the Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 are being considered and will depend on the Steam version’s performance. The developer has also announced that a portion of the revenue will be donated to social welfare organizations supporting children.
