The top 100 best-selling games in Japan, 2025

A list of the top 100 best-selling video games in Japan for the year of 2025 was published in the 12th February 2026 issue of Weekly Famitsu.

The number of sales tallied is from 12 Dec 2024 to 28 Dec 2025. Games released prior to this period also have their lifetime sales listed in addition to their 2025 sales.

Multi-platform games have each version tallied separately. Different versions of games such as the Switch and Switch 2 versions of Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A are also listed separately from other versions.

Digital sales are not tallied, meaning that download purchases are not included on the list. Download cards sold in stores are tallied.

Things to take away from the rankings

2025’s sales were overwhelmingly shaped by the launch and rapid adoption (even given scarcity in Japanese stores which carries on to 2026) of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo again dominated the top 100, with the majority of entries being Switch or Switch 2 titles, and a visible pattern of dual-version releases (Switch and Switch 2 editions of the same game) occupying separate slots. The top three games were a split across Switch and Switch 2, with the top title Mario Kart World exceeding two million physical sales on Switch 2 alone (whereas the top title in 2024, Super Mario Party Jamboree, did not hit one million). This indicates not just platform continuity, but an active migration of Nintendo’s install base to new hardware. It can also be noticed that in many cases, the Switch version of a game that is also available on the Switch 2 sold better, the most obvious example being Pokemon Z-A in 2nd and 3rd place.

Sony’s position improves at the very top of the chart compared to many previous years, with Monster Hunter Wilds placing 4th overall and becoming the highest-ranking PS5 title of 2025. PS5 software presence in the top 30 is also stronger than in 2024 through high-profile releases such as Death Stranding 2, Metal Gear Solid Δ, Silent Hill f, and Elden Ring Nightreign.

The platform split strategy for multi-platform games continues to be evident. Titles such as Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, Atelier Yumia, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Dragon Quest I & II appear in separate entries for different platforms.

On the hardware side, the impact of Switch 2 is decisive. With nearly 3.8 million units sold in 2025 alone despite scarcity, it immediately became the dominant console of the year, far outpacing all other platforms combined. The original Switch family (OLED, Lite, and standard models) still contributes significant volume, demonstrating demand even during this transitional period.

Xbox hardware remains marginal. Combined sales of Series S, Series X, and the Digital Edition are negligible compared to both Nintendo and Sony, and once again no Xbox platform titles appear in the top 100 software list, underscoring the platform’s limited install base and market influence in Japan.
